Redact a PDF

Black out confidential text and pictures, and remove them from the file itself, so they can't be copied, searched or uncovered. It all happens on your device.

How to redact a PDF

  1. Choose your PDF. It opens in the editor at Redact.
  2. Mark what to remove: drag over an area with Mark area, select text and choose Mark selected text, or type a word or number and choose Mark all to mark every match.
  3. Choose Apply redactions, then save the redacted PDF.

Redacted, not just covered

A black box drawn over text in most editors leaves the text underneath: anyone can copy it out or search for it. StaplePDF removes the letters, the parts of pictures and the drawings under each mark from the file, then draws the box. It can also strip hidden information: the author, metadata, attachments and scripts.

Private by design

Documents that need redacting are the last ones to upload. StaplePDF redacts them inside your browser; the file never leaves your device.

Questions

Can a redaction be undone?

In the editor, yes, until you save: undo brings the content back. In the file you save, no: what was under the marks is gone.

Does it work on scans?

Yes: a marked area removes the part of the picture under it, too.
